1963 Merc waterpump problem

I have a 1963 mercury 50HP 4CYL that I put muffs on and water comes out around the center of the prop. <br />There is a hole about 1 inch wide and about a 1/2 inch tall under the powerhead that I was expecting to see water come out of. I dont know much about this motor hope someone can help me. also there was water in the lower gear oil hope the lower end is alright Im afraid to do anthing with it till I make sure it is getting cooled.Have more questions but one thing at a time.Thanks

got pics, if so send em, you should stick the engine in say half a 55 gal drum full of water and start it up pending there is no problems with your gearcase. see if it pumps water that way, this also creates backpressure on the engine for more accurate troublesholting, repost you results

With a 1963 motor, unless you know the impeller was just changed, you should replace it anyway. If there is water in the LU, you need to address that also. So, I'd say drop the lower unit, replace the impeller, pressure test the LU to see where it is leaking, replace seals as needed, or replace all the LU seals to be on the safe side. I'm assuming you got the motor to fire and you are interested in going forward with getting it up to snuff. Is water supposed to come out of the prop? Should it be peeing out of the slot I described below the power head? And yes I got the motor to run I had to take the top off the carb's and clean the floats I also stretched the little springs that are in the center of the floats. The carb’s had no varnish in them. The owner told me “the motor runs it just does not go forward vary good “ that could mean a lot of things but I am not a boat motor person but I do fix my own cars. The vacuum lines from the distributor are dry rotted so I will replace them. The fuel supply line was as hard as a rock, replaced that. I just don’t want to spend 80 dollars on a book to spend a weekend and who knows how much money to fix something that is just a part of the problem
