Hey all,

We bought a new legend fishing boat last year, came with a 30HP ELPT 4 stroke outboard motor.

A few hours after getting it in the water, the motor would stall under load. It ran fine at idle and at regular speeds - but when pulling a tube at top end it would cut in and out (off/on, off/on) or stop and start. Back off on the power and it was fine.

The marina said it was a fuel pump part - made sense to me. So they replaced it. It didn't fix anything. So they put in a whole new fuel pump. That seemed to fix it for the duration of last year.

This year it's doing exactly the same thing once again. So either Merc has ongoing fuel pump problems, I got sold a lemon motor :) or it's not the fuel pump. My limited knowledge though, fuel problems seem to make sense.

Any thoughts on what the problem likely is? (I'm also not so sure I want to keep this motor if it's having problems. Any comments on what a marina would say if I suggested I'll pay the upgrade difference to a new 40HP and they take the 30HP back?).

Well, the 40 would definitely be a better choice, however I think the marina would nix the idea of taking the 30 back. They will want more than just the price difference I would guess. If you became a pain in the @$$ to them though, they may be more inclined to make a deal to keep you from coming back and complaining!

Stay on them and make them get it fixed, a new motor should not be giving you such trouble. I don't know of anything with new mercs having fuel problems, but a 30HP pulling a tube is going to get taxed to the max.
