45hp merc. runs awhile then wont start

i have changed the power pack but the new one will not open all the way, the old one gets hot and then wont start. put the old one on and ran for 1 1/2hrs. then would not start. have tried to troubleshoot wiring but found nothing. any ideas? it is a 1986 model.

Try disconnecting the 2 yellow wire from the stator at the rectifier. A shorted rectifier will act like that

i disconnected the wire but it still will not start.
