Can someone diagnose this problem?

A friend of mine has a Mariner 4hp 1993 with an internal tank and external tank connector. When he uses the internal tank, gas leaks out of the external tank connector and the engine cuts out after about 5 mins.

Now there's a leaver on one side of the motor, is this a a cut off valve for internal/external tanks? And if so which position should it sit in when using for example external tank....and the internal tank?

Do you have a picture you can post of the connector?

It's the same as the yamaha connectors.

Sounds like the connector may have a worn gasket inside.
