'83 merc. 6cly. stutters between 1500-200rpm

My '83 merc. 6cyl. idles fine but surges up and down between 1500-2000rpm. Cleaned carbs and put on new spark plug wires. Runs fine before and after 1500-2000rpm with muffs. What next?

Do ALL three idle needles have the desired effect on it? If so, try disconnecting the idle stabilizer and try it again.<br /><br />-W

Did as you suggested and the boat ran fine in the shop under the muffs, but when I put it in the water and under pressure it planed and then cut out and then was only able to run it at 1500 rpm after that and nothing more. Can it be that the stator is toast or is there something else I am overlooking?

Found the problem!! I was my stator. Replaced with new one and now works better than ever.
