I need help with getting the shifting adjusted correctly and maximun throttle on this 850.The motor doesn't want to respond after engaging in fw until almost into the 9 0'clock postion on the control handle. This holds true for the engine speed as well. I want to make sure both cables are adjusted correctly. When put into reverse, the motor makes a "ratcheting" sound. I don't believe anything is wrong with the l/u. Thanks.

Re: 850 Merc shifter/throttle adjustment

blevi, The best way to adjust the cables is to put the throttle handle in the 12:00 position (neutral) and disconnect both cables. Now, move the shifter slid into neutral. It will "click" into neutral. Turn the prop by hand to make sure it is neutral. Now make sure you have the shift cable, and adjust the barrell nut until it matches the shifter slides position, and reattach. Now push the throttle all the way closed, adjust the throttle cable barrell nut until it matches the throttle are and reattach it.

One more thing, these motors have two neutrals. If you find your shifting is reversed, you will need to drop the lower unit, and set the LU to the correct neutral.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try and see what happens. I know the l/u is in the correct neutral position, I just need to get the cables adjusted.
