Tilt/Trim on Mariner 150 has mind of its own

I'm unsure of the model year of this motor. My guess would be mid-1980s - early 1990s. The motor will periodically start tilting up on its own. Once it reaches the full "up" position the tilt motor continues whirring. Pushing the tilt down button has no effect during these periods. To get the prop back in the water, you have to discconnect and reconnect the battery. The motor will inevitably start trimming itself back up within 15-20 minutes. If any of you have any suggestions, I greatly appreciate them. Thanks.

Thats ussally the cowl switch for the trim shorted out disconnect it to see if it stops

That is the same problem I am experiencing with my 200 SS merc. <br /><br />When the tilt motor is stuck running in the up direction, pressing the down botton on the cowl switch will correct the condition. This leads me think it is the cowl switch that is the problem. <br /><br />Was yours the switch on the cowl or the switch on the throttle?

Can also be up/down trim relays and/or harness connectors that plug into the relays. Look for bent/damaged fingers in the sockets.

neither the cowl or throttle switch were responsive when the tilt motor decided to run up. in other words, no buttons i pushed in any location made any difference.<br /><br />the problem seems to have self-corrected by whatever magical rules outboard motors seem to adhere to. thanks for the suggestions, guys.
