150 HP motor -- no! 5 HP -- yes. We can't see your motor. What motor are we talking about here. Even a small motor will heat up a trash can half full of water so make sure you have a hose running in it to keep it cool.

i have a 1990 40 hp. i need to adjust the idle mixture after rebuiding the carbs and would rather do it in the driveway if a homemade test tank would provide the same results.

you can do preliminary on muffs, but you need to finish on the water. a 40 would blow that can empty in no time.

I can run my 20 hp motor in a trash can in gear at idle without blowing out the water--I'd say give it a try. If you're just adjusting idle mix and speed, which must be done in gear, you should be able to do that. You may need to fine tune it on the water. Keep a hose running into it to keep it topped up. Or use a 55 gallon drum if the trash can doesn't work. And don't rev it!
