Hello,

I purchased a 1982 18HP Mercury Mariner Outboard yesterday. I have it on a 1971 14ft Aluminum Mirrocraft. I am bringing the Motor to a back yard mechanic in a few days who's very trustworthy. He worked on outboards for 20 years before he retired. Now he does it as a part time hobby.

Anyway, I have some extra cash to invest in the engine because I got the combo for a really good price. I know it needs a tune up but I was wondering if anyone had other suggestions for things I could do to the engine. I've been reading threads where guys are swapping out parts on a 25HP Mercury Outboard to add extra power to the engine. I'd like to focus on fishing this summer and spend as little time as possible bringing my boat back and forth having it repaired. All suggestions are welcome. I appreciate the help.

Best Regards,

Brian "Big Daddy" Nipps :p

Have him do the waterpump impeller, inspect the wiring, and in general tell him you want it to be reliable and fix stuff that looks "iffy".

-W

Thanks W! I appreciate the advice. Hopefully I'll be the guy with his line in the water, not the guy with his engine cover off and his tool box spread out on the bottom of the boat.

Nipps

Probably doesn't have one, but just in case, you might have him check for a thermostat and if it has one swap it out along with that impeller job.

Mark
