Mercury XR 150

Hey gang, <br />Nice forum,<br /><br />I have an XR150 Mercury outboard and have replaced the impeller a long time ago. the PSI on the guage is not up to par and have decided to replace it again. <br />I removed the trim tab, removed the other 4 bolts but can not get the lower unit to separate. then I remembered that this might have a shaft that has to be removed under the carbs. There is an "L shaped arms to the shifter control but really don't see how to remove it. <br /><br />any suggestions...<br /><br />thanks in advance.<br />Smilin' Jack

Nope, Don't need to do that...<br /><br />Where were all the bolts or nuts located that you have removed so far?<br /><br />When you removed the trim tab did you see another bolt that actually connects the lower unit to the drive shaft housing?

After you have removed the three nuts toward the front, the bolt under the trim tab, and the two nuts above the prop, you should be good to go. I often use a rubber mallet to "persuade" the lower unit to let go. Don't use a metal hammer, this may persuade the lower unit housing to crack, leaving the impeller as the least of your worries.

do you see 2 more nuts on the lower unit towards the back above where the prop goes into the housing. The nuts are located on either side just below the cav plate.

got it off...<br /><br />found out that there were two more bolts under the plate so that made 3 in the front and 3 in the rear... .<br />Thanks for the help... now to get the parts ordered.<br /><br />Smilin' Jack

Ok since you guys I have to admit know engines.<br /><br />Which way does the shaft spin on the lower unit when viewed from the top... Clockwise?<br /><br />2 more questions.<br />1. Is there suppose to be a rubber washer about 3/16 inch thick inserted on the top of the water pump housing it is actually BETWEEN the metal housing that the impeller is enclosed in and the plastic case. there was one in the kit, it fit and slid over the drive shaft. I thought maybe I did not put it in last time. <br /><br />2nd question.<br />the boat was in neutral but when installing the impeller I turned the shifter pin. Now it seems like I can not find neutral where the prop does not spin.. Keep trying? Or should I just relax and put the shifter knob on the boat into forward once I find out which way the drive shaft spins and reassemble the lower unit.<br /><br />Sorry for the beginner questions... but it has been a long time since i fooled around with an impeller. <br /><br />Smilin' Jack

It turns clockwise. <br /><br />I would somehow get the L/U in neutral, whether the shifter is in forward/reverse...Drop the L/U...Put the shifter back in neutral...reinstall the L/U.

The rubber or neoprene washer slides over the shaft and sits on top of the water pump housing.

Thanks for the answer. The washer did fit in the small space between inside the top waterpump housing and the metal enclosure that the impeller sits in. I'll take it out and put it on top of the water pump housing over the shaft.<br /><br />Jack
