Default Yamaha 115 Four Sroke Fuel Injected model

I have twin motors on a 21 footer with hours clocked at 530. The motors are 18 months old.The left hand motor tachometer shows the engine block warning indicator when motor is run at over 3500rpm for say 5 minutes. Engine runs perfectly. The indicator flashes 4 times then 9 times. What does this mean, what could the problem be.The boat is in a remote area, a reasonable distance from a service technician. What is the indicator telling me.Thanks for your help

Is it the temp or oil indicator? If it's the temp, then the cooling system could be partially clogged. This could be caused by dirt or wax build up at the water intake, or a plugged "pee hole", etc. If something is leaking you should easily be able to detect it under the cowl.Or the water pump/impeller could be bad. If you dry started the outboard or run in dirty, silty waters the impeller could be worn or slipping on shaft. Also the thermostat could be corroded or malfuntioning. If its the oil indicator then it could be just about anything from wrong viscosity, dirty, or low oil, to a clogged oil filter. I suppose the oil pump could even be bad.The sensor and gauge could be faulty as well. At 530 hours this thing is just getting broken in. I see you're still on warranty, so don't be afraid to call your dealer.

Thanks Guys But it is not the water temp or oil as these have separate warning indicators. The actual icon that comes up is the engine block sign. With these thing being fully electronic and technical it could be as simple as a spark plug not working properly or something more sinister. The fact that is flashes 4 times then 9 times suggests it may be a code for something. Given that both engines have done 530 hours and only 1 is flashing the warning indicator suggests it is not a maintenance issue.Worst comes to worst I'll have to tow it too a dealer....buggercheers macca

I don't know if this will help, but I had a similar problem as follows:

I have three Yamaha 4 strokes that are nearing two years old. I haven't had to add even a quart of oil in over 230 hours, and they run great.

Today I noticed an engine warning icon blinking on the port engine tach. I went into the Yamaha service manual and saw that there was a code for "neutral" switch (Code 31 - ECM).

I went back to the boat, and checked the shifters (I have separate shifters/Kavlars?).

I noted the shifter was not exactly in the neutral position, so I "jiggled" it in, and started the engine.

The engine icon warning blinking did not occur.

I hope this was the cause of the "blinking engine icon" on the tach.

Last week while fishing 27 miles from port, I mistakenly started two of my Yamaha's 225s while they were in gear, and I noticed that the "engine icons" blinked on those two tach's.

Now, I think I know why.

Hope this helps out anyone on this "blog".

I almost went to check for water in my engine fuel filter/separators. - even though I have never had "water" in the Racors and the boat below never produced even one drop of water in 6 years of running around - and two sets of engines (3 Evinrudes and now Yammies).

When the engines were installed the installer allowed the engines to be able to be started while in gear - so ya gotta be careful...

Not an expert, but according to my manual, the two self-diagnostics that start with 4 blinks are: CKP sensor 4-2 and Fuel Injector 4-3. In my book, there aren't any that go 4-9. Good luck.
