I use a piece of steel plumbers strapping which I bolt to two of the 5/16" flywheel bolts. This lifts my inline six Merc 1500 just fine.

I used the nut off the flywheel. Mine is about 1" thick and I can get 4 threads on the crank and 4 threads on the pull bolt by backing it off the flywheel. Used a U shaped hanger of 1/8" steel (what trailers use to hold their springs to the trailer frame) with a bolt thru it and chain thru the bolt. Works fine.

Since the bolt/nut are rated for like 50,000#/square inch, 4 threads will hold up about 20,000#. The 300# of your engine is a no brainer for it.

Mark
