O.K., Amd ... but where did you find the model/serial crossover charts?

I just came into a Mercury 20HP this afternoon that I can't determine the year either ... unlike most others, there's no year on the ID plate ... just a serial 5765 766.

The engine looks as though it's barely had any use and starts on the first pull, but, so far, all I can locate is a range from 81 through 88 and, looking at the engine, I find that hard to believe.

According to the serial number, that is a 1980/1981 20hp motor. Mercury would refer to it as a 1980 motor, although it may have been built in 1981.

To find out the model number I use mercurypartsexpress.com, but it only works for newer motors.

As for the serial/year cross reference there are quite a few sites that post the documents. One I had used before would be maxrules.com for example.

Thanks here too, AMD ... The MasterTech site is very interesting and chock full of information. I shoulda known about him before I rebuilt an old (1941) Johnson that had been in the family since 1946.

Mercury parts express doesn't like my 7 digit model number ... says it wants 8 and no matter where I put a zero, it spits up, probably, as you say, because of the age. But ... you've given me a good lead and I appreciate it ...
