Shallow drive lever replacement

Hi all,

Hoping to find some help with a problem that I have with my outboard. 1986 Mercury 20hp short shaft, serial # 0A919796.

In the process of moving the motor from the back of my truck to the boat (in 4 degree weather) I inadvertantly snapped off the shallow drive lever. I was able to purchase a new lever at the local marina. Looking at the current design of the shallow drive system, I am unsure of where to start the re-install process. There is a pin that runs the width of the shallow drive plate, in fact, that plate hinges on that pin. However, the lever is connected not only to that pin, but also to a series of what seem to be springs (coiled wire?). Not sure how to get that pin out of there to start, and what to do from there. The part was $5.00, and I surely do not wish to spend another $150.00 at the marina if I can do this myself.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

BFG
