66 Merc 650 timing marks

I bought a boat rather cheap and not running. But the compression checks ok (100 to 112 psi). I noticed the timing mark is at BDC of #1 (top cylinder) instead of TDC. I was wondering if maybe it has the wrong flywheel, or if I have other problems.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Somebody had that flywheel apart. Find TDC on #1 piston, remove the 8 bolts in the middle of the flywheel and turn it to 0 degrees. Then reassemble using red loctite on the bolts. I don't have the torque handy. You'll need to make sure the timing belt is in time. You'll need a manual. Unbolting the flywheel from it's hub won't change the timing. But it could be off from previous work and, if off by one tooth, can burn holes in the pistons.

Ok, sounds easy enough. I bought a Seloc manual, so I'll look into the timing after I fix the timing mark. Thanks, Willy
