Default lower Unit Oil leak - 25Hp 2002 Yamaha

My 2002 outboard leaks about a tablespoon of oil overnight from the lower unit around the propshaft. I bought the 4 month old motor used. There is minor damage to the prop causing very slight vibration. Could that be causing the leak ? I plan to replace the prop , but what else may need work ?

You need to do a simple pressure test on your lower unit. Any marine shop has this unit if you don't have one yourself. It screws into the fill hole and is a simple almost no cost deal. Possiblities: Fishing line wound around shaft needs to be pulled out and seal is still ok. Next the is seal needs to be replaced. Third and I hope not: The shaft is bent and needs to be straigtened and hopefully not replaced ($). That last one is expensive. You do need the test and at least look for the fishing line. Good luck.

Hello heatstrokeFirst be sure this oil is in fact gear oil, leaking from the gear case. Make sure it is not exhaust residue dripping from thru hub exhaust. There could be other damage besides the prop. Use a dial indicator to determine if the prop shaft is bent. Check for fishing line, grass, etc wound around prop shaft. Look carefully at the exhaust housing (lower leg) and try to see if that is bent. Some times motors get backed over at the boat ramp. Folks forget to lift before launch. It my also have been involved in a highway incedent. Your prop can probably be repaired at a good prop shop. You may need to replace prop shaft seals. Lets hope thats all.

First thing is to get the prop fixed and not run the motor until it is fixed or replaced. That little vibration can and will cause big damage to the lower unit if you replace it get the old one fixed for a spare and keep it in the boat, neaver run a motor with a bent or damaged prop. Then get the lower unit pressure tested and have them check and make sure the prop shaft is not damaged. Do you know what caused the damage on the old prop? and what material is the old prop made from.
