I was in the process of transfering the lower unit from my 1970 1150 parts motor to my good motor when I found 3 large metal pieces at the bottom of the 1970 housing resting on to of the bearing carrier.
These pieces are 3 to 5 inches in length and about 2 inches wide and seem to have broken away from something as the edges are jagged and irregular. they also have tapped / threaded holes in them. There is no damage to the lower unit at all, and for the life of me I cant figure out where these chunks of metal came from. The water jacket plate and first exhaust plate are intact, so I guess that rules them out?? Should I keep tearing the powerhead apart looking for the source?
Any body have any ideas?

Aerocook, I do not think the exhaust baffle or inner water jacket cover have tapped holes. Have you looked at the exhaust tube inside the midsection? The only other choice is the piece of aluminum that seperates the exhaust stream, in the midsection, where the powerhead bolts on.

Ya... I'd say it's midsection parts you're seeing, leave the powerhead alone.

-W
