In another thread here, someone posted this:
"As a sidenote I have the partlist for the 40/50/60 EFI 4Stroke (it's the same partlist for all three) and the only difference is in fact the computer (ECM) and decals.
Here is the # for the 60 ECM:
89195238T ECM 1 $783.00"

Here's the thread:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=020137

I posted this Q here vs there as I didn't want to trash his thread but we have an '03 Merc EFI 4 Stroke 40HP that could use more power (boat only goes 28 mph) and the boat's rated for 60HP. Not sure I'd like to spend almost $800 to replace its ECM but is that really all that's different between the two? If so, anyone know of a cheaper parts source?

It's all in the ECU, but then a different prop is required to utilise the extra ponies. It won't be as simple as just replacing the brain.

There is no cheap way to buy a new ECU, merc has a monopoly.

"It won't be as simple as just replacing the brain"

OK, ECU and prop then? That's simple IMO.

I agree it's simple (I did the ecu post). I'll be doing it the month my warranty is up(50hp to 60hp). I could use more power, my boat is rated for 90hp but I need to keep the 50hp decals (hint hint).

I don't know if merc would sell us the ECU however. Any Merc dealers out there? What do you guys think of that and the idea in general?

No cheaper parts source that I know of, once these engines get along in age mabey Rapair will make them on an R&R basis, don't know.

You would also need to remove the air restrictor.

You can indeed buy an ECM from any Mercury dealer in the US. $ 705.00

Once it's shipped, it's yours!

Where is the air restrictor located?

Companies like repair and Sierra will only make these units if there is a demand.
Early outboard electrics were very unreliable, therefore it was worth the after market companies making coils, powerpacks etc. However the modern outboard electronics are very good, therefore I think it is unlikely that they will make substitute parts
Time will tell

Well In 03 they made a 3 cyl 40hp and a 4 cyl 40hp if I recall .Model and serial # would help to know if you can upgrade.

The plot thickens........
It's presently being stored about 60 miles from here but I know that it's a 3 cylinder, 40 HP engine. I then gather that after all this, the 60HP version is a 4 cylinder engine?

I don't have the serial # and/or model # written down and I won't see the boat for months now (WI and winter). It's not a Bigfoot model. If the 60HP version is a 4 cylinder, it's then "end of story" as far as my 40HP engine is concerned.

well after looking into it today at work they did make a 3 cyl bigfoot as well as a 4 cyl bigfoot but if you have a 3 cyl as you say you are right and are out of luck .

OK, found the info. The ONLY 4 cylinder EFI 4 stroke 40 HP is the Bigfoot. The other two listed are 3 cyl. Both the 50 and 60HP are 4 cylinder.
