engine stalls when I put it in gear

Hi. I have a 1982 170HP Mercruiser. I started up the engine recently with the boat on the trailer. Everything was fine while the boat was in neutral, but it stalled out immediately when I put it in gear. Is this just a safety feature or is there something wrong with my boat?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Bob

I hope you had the water muffs on the motor, otherwise you are heading to overheating and big, big problems.<br />If the above was looked after(muffs on) then a possible problem could be fuel. Carburators adjusted properly? Had they been cleaned in recent years? The fuel pump is up to snuff?<br /><br />Alex

most likly a stiff lower shift cable is triggering the shift cut out switch. <br /> its common.
