Default YAMAHA can't trim down from control switch and its not the switch.

Hello,I did do a key word search on this board and I did not find my answer so I will ask it in hope of an answer from anyone that had the same problem.I have a 90 yamaha 250. has a trim switch on the control and on the outboard. The switch on the outboards works fine up and down. The problem is the down on the control switch. I know for a fact it is not the switch. I tested it. While I had undid the plug I jumped it and the thing actually went down for a second. Then I knew that it was not a wire connection. I did not try to jump the wires on the outboard cause I did not have a manual. I know though that it is light green and light blue for the up/down.I was reading some posting about the relay going out. But I was thinking to myself, how can it be the relay if I still can tilt it down from the outboard motor switch ? Are there 2 separate relays for the control switch and the outboard switch?Any help will be appreciated.

G'day. there are 2 relays on yor motor, one for up & one for down. one test is to have someone tap the relays with a screwdriver while you operate the switch. If you find a problem it is best to change both relays.

There are not two seperate sets of relays...only one set for both switches. Seems to me you have a short in the wires from the switch not on the motor. The good thing is you can still get them up and down.

Howdy, I know that you said it wasn't the switch, but ... are you 100% sure? The contacts in those switches can get some corrosion built up on them. My 88 Yam had the same problem, but it wouldn't trim up at the helm. I took the switch apart and cleaned it up, works fine now.How did you test the switch again? If I am following what you did, you said that you unplugged the switch and jumped it and the motor moved down. I am assuming that you jumped the connector going to the motor at the helm with the switch unplugged. This would indicate to me that all is working fine and that the switch is bad. What am I missing here?

rbu, yes, I double checked the switch. Its working. What I did was checked it with a meter. The switch had 3 wires. one positve and the other 2 were up/down. my up was working and my down didn't so one quick way to test the switch would to switch the up and down wires. switch worked. It must be the old wires. thanks for the tips.
