My 225 Mercury 2 stroke was recently rebuilt.Specifically,I had air getting in the fuel through some check valves and gaskets(new ones are neoprene-old were just rubber. My problem was the boat was slow to plane and just slow.Pitch on prop is stainless and 19. My boat is a 26ft. center console trying to hit 50mph.Please post your boats top speed so I can compare. Should I buy a 250hp or 300hp or am I good? specifically I'd like outboard comparisons. My top speed so far is 48mph with a 225hp motor on a 26ft. boat.

I think your are in the max zone. You may have to go too twins to get up there. A 300 verado may get you there but it's expensive. My 25' Fountain CC had a single 200 and went 46-48 MPH. Put a 225 EFI on and got to 55 empty, but you could not hardly get on plane with 4 fisherman and equipment. I also propped it out and found the vented 19 to be the best, and my fountain is extremely light. My Chris Craft Scorpion CC, 23' has a 3.4L 300 merc, and it moves 55-60 loaded up. I recently put a bracket on the fountain and I am putting 2 225 EFI's on it. I am hoping for 60-65 loaded, with 70+ empty. My calculations should put me in the Zone. Another factor is deadrise.... What is yours, and what type of hull is it?? Is it heavy/light??

My hull is light,2700 lbs. dry with a 23 1/2 degree deadrise.Should I be getting more than 48mph out of this motor? Is there anything I, as a non-mechanic, can do to increase performance? I'm using synthetic blend oil(pennzoil), I flush the motor each time, I put new plugs in every 6 months, I open my Racor filter each usage to drain any water or sludge, and my prop is clean and straight at 19 pitch. Thanks for the reply.

Scarab1, I believe you are at the best you be with that motor. That is a pretty deep v, and takes a little more HP to keep it up on the keel. You can do what I did, and switch to an EFI which will give you more maximum RPM's, or go to a bigger motor all together. You are doing all the right stuff in regards to maintenance, but you need more RPM's or a bigger motor (so you can prop up to a 21' or 23').

You have not had a rush till you pop a 24' dingy on plane surfing over a wave and see the Knot meter break 20

And the roster tail comeing off the rudder is a site to behold

My 1973 18' Glassmaster Tarpon tri-hull equipped with it's original L6 165 HP Mercruiser will do 41 mph (gps) @ 4,300 rpm with two adults and half a fuel load on board. The prop is an aluminum 14.5x19.

Plenty fast for me at my age in a 34 year old boat.

Since bond-o didn't answer your question

why would your boat be 11mph faster in saltwater?

I'll guess maybe the saltwater has greasy qualities and that's why he?

bond-o says
