Mercury 90HP 4stroke outlet manifold corrosion

We are running 4 boats from Gamba, Gabon (Central Africa) with 90HP Mercury 4stroke outboards. One by one, our engines have failed due to corrosion of the outlet manifolds, which resulted to expensive repairs and downtime. Almost in all the cases with almost new engines (approx 200 running hours!). We now know this is due to the quality of gasoline available, which makes the exhaust gases corrosive...<br /><br />Have any of you guys out there got experiences similar to this? Any solutions? And (since we are about to buy some replacements) are there better options (other brands/types) to buy if the fuel available is of dodgy quality?

A fuel system additive/treatment would help with the fuel quality issue. After using the engine a fresh water rinse will definitely help eliminate some of the corrosion causing elements. Mercury has an attachment available for this specific purpose without having to use muff's. All you have to do is connect the fresh water supply to this fitting and run the engine out of the water for a short period of time.

Jay, thanks for your answer. Since we are running the boats in sweet water, corrosion from the water quality could be a factor, although I'm not sure how big it would be. <br />Treatment of the fuel: what would a solution like that look like? Placing a filter or adding some kind of additive to the fuel? <br /><br />thanks, Vincent
