Pull the cowling and look the wiring over for burns, melting, or discoloration. Look @ the heads for burnt paint or stains from leaks. Do an ignition check with a spark tester on each cylinder with the spark plugs removed. To do a compression check at this time also. Push the disengagement button and advance the throttle to WOT (wide open throttle). One cylinder at a time with a compression gauge, turn the engine over several revolutions with the key switch. Compression should be NO LESS THAN 100 PSI. With a difference of NO MORE THAN 5 PSI between all cylinders. Ask the seller start the engine for you also. This is a tell/tell sign that you are not about to get screwed on the deal. A first time owners most common mistake is not hearing the engine run and taking someones word for it. If you decide to buy it, cover your ***, and have the water pump impeller and lower unit lube changed, regardless of what the previous owner says. Good Luck.

I would just like to add that the tolerable difference in compression between cylinders is a bit more liberal, more like 10%.
