I have a chance to pick up a pair of 225 4 stroke Merc –a- has from a buddy. My question is that I know these are essentially Yamahas painted black but what about living with them now? Are there parts available from Merc? Would I have to go to Yamaha for service? Can I use Merc controls or can I use Yamaha controls?

These motors have HIGH hours 700+ but they are always serviced and he only wants to get rid of them so he can sell the Hull. Everyone is scared of the hours but I know that well maintained equipment keeps running.

Thoughts?
Mac

You want to go to a Yamaha dealer with those anyhow. Merc didn't sell many of them and most dealers won't have much by way of test equipment or experience. A LOT of Merc dealers sell Yamahas as well because of the parallel lines. Maintenance items should be little problem, but major repairs may get sticky as Yamaha pulls their suport for Mercahas in the coming years. Getting parts via a Merc-only dealers could get lengthy.
