I have an inboard 90hp mercury jet sport engine and need help tunning the carbs. I just purchased this boat and when I took it out to the lake it would hit 35mph with 2 people in it, when putting 4 people including myself it would drop down to like 10mph. I don't think the engine is running as strong as it should. Is the boat suppose to do that. I did not max out the weight or come close. I have read that this engine in a 15ft boat is suppose to go around 35-40 with no problems. Also when turning the boat it seems to almost come to a stop. Can someone help me out with these problems and help me understand why it is doing this. Thanks for all your help.

You can only adjust the idle speed mixtuture. It has fixed main jets.

Does the motor slow way down, or does it maintain RPMs as the boat loses speed? If the latter, I'd suspect a worn impeller and wear ring. Too much gap between them and it loses thrust. The 2 to 4 person symptom seems to favor this theory.

Yep, wear ring/impellor clearance is place to start. While your down there inspect the gasket/ride plate.

35 mph with a merc sport jet 90 is pretty good. What kind of boat?

If you get overloaded the boat wont plane out.

With 4 people, at 10 MPH, where were all the people sitting, how big were they, and did you try to move two of them to the front?

Ken
