Mercury -89 80 HP and starting problem etc.

Hi, my Mercury -89 80 HP has starting problem if I do not use the engine for some weeks and specially when it is raining weather.<br />If I clean the spark plugs, then it starts.<br /><br />Normally the engine starts, but not on all cylinders. If I give the engine more power, then it will goes at all cylinders.<br /><br />Anyone know the problem? If the engine is warm, normally no problem. At high speed it works fine.<br /><br />Thanks in advance and I would be very grateful if anyone knows the problem, because it is very irritating. What do the spark plugs look like when you remove them? Are they fowled with fuel or carbon?<br />If the engine is tilted up when not being used, fuel may draining from the carbs and then flooding the engine when attempting to start it. Fresh plugs solves the problem. One solution would be to disconnect the fuel line and run the engine out of fuel. However, running the engine out of fuel also means its running briefly with no lubrication so think about "potential" consequences before doing that.

Had this problem before. A new stator took care of it. Although I replaced the stator for other reasons, the new stator seemed to take care of this problem as well.<br /><br />-andy

I am very grateful!<br /><br />The spark plugs are fowled with carbon and it seems that the problem is worse, when the engine is tilted up when it is not being used.<br /><br />Yes, I have noticed from many forums, that the Stator can be the problem. <br /><br />I have done the service myself of my Mercury since -92 and if I let a workshop here in Sweden look at my Mercury and maybe change the Stator, it will cost me to much money ;-)<br /><br />Can I easily check if the Stator is not okey?<br /><br />How do I know if I need the 9 or 16 amp Stator?<br />Can I check it, without taking the flywheel away?<br /><br />Thanks in advance! /Jan-Erik
