Temp Gauge Working?

How do I tell if my gauge is working properly.<br />I removed the sender and put a match near it and the gauge moved up, but how do I know if it is accurate.It always stays on the low end of the scale. No temp readings on the gauge only 5 marks.Usually the motor operates at the first mark. 3rd mark is straight up. Thanks!

Thats a pretty vague question. What size and year motor ? Without number indicators there is no way to know what the differnt marks on the gauge indicate. You could calibrate the gauge and sender by using hot water and a candy thermometer I guess if you wanted to know the temp at each mark on the gauge.
