temporary tachometer?

Great group guys!
I would like to know if I can use a digital engine analyzer for a temporary tach. Its a small "alltest" that measures amps, ohms, volts, dwell and tach with 2 thru 8 cyl switch. 4 wires include (positive and negative)and(red and green)....instructions for tach: "connect red test lead to negative terminal of the coil, select cyls, switch to tach, read rpm"
Will I short anything out by using these automotive directions?
Its a 1970 merc 1350. Does 55mph WOT after link-n-sync. She's runnin so good Im scared to short anything until I find a compatible tach.

Why take a chance? Leave it alone until you get the proper tach.

Re: temporary tachometer?

Good point but I am also hesitant about hooking up legit tach with all the old wiring I have babied. I was hoping someone had done it before without problems. Just weighing my options, thanks

I don't know about hooking it up...but it most likely would not work if it's meant for automotive use. 2 cycle engines fire twice as many times as a car engine...so it would read double the RPMs.
