Questions on lower unit????

We had a lower unit go bad and a friend gave us one that he knows nothing about. All we have is the serial number, we know nothing at all. If someone can give me information I sure would appreciate it. The SS# 2978988 and it is a Mercury.<br />Thanks in advance, Debbie

Forgot to ask the other questions, will this one be interchangable with a 1985 mercury 50 hp? Since I am new to all of this I'm not sure about all the questions to ask. Any other information will be great.<br /><br />Thanks, Debbie
