New inner most exhaust plate arrived, I was, as always a little anal about getting it just right.... I put it on a glass surface and it rocked back and forth very very slightly...

I decided this was nothing to worry about as there are so many bolts pulling it down to the block anyway...

Here's the problem... I added some permatex red to the block surface and wearing latex gloves smeared an even amount over what apeared to be the mating surface.. I placed on the gasket, then covered the gasket in an even coating of the same. Got all new bolts with washers... A dab of extra strong permatex red thread lock on each bolt.
I then tightend in 3 even stages using my 3/8" drive norbar torque wrench.

Stage 1 - 5.5ft/lb - 66in/lb
Stage 2 - 11ft/lb - 132in/lb
Stage 3 - 16.5ft/lb - 199in/lb

On stage 3 near several of the bolts the gasket split out the side... I have attached pictures..

http://myfishingpics.com/photopost48c/showphoto.php?photo=3883&sort=1&size=medium&cat=500&page=1

http://myfishingpics.com/photopost48c/showphoto.php?photo=3884&sort=1&size=medium&cat=500&page=1

http://myfishingpics.com/photopost48c/showphoto.php?photo=3885&sort=1&size=medium&cat=500&page=1

Why has this happened, is it supposed to...

What did I do wrong and what should I do now...

Please help folks, I really am trying my best.

Many Thanks

Stan

looks like you got your hands full. i know your showing that the gasket pushed out from where you want it but it should'nt cause any problem unless there is a gap that you could see. the gasket may be pushing out due to the torque but if there is no gap being exposed there should not be a problem. sorry if this doesnt help.

Thanks for the reply folks, I was advised to use permatex red as a gasket dressing but I have now gathered that the problem was...too much!

Can someone please advise on just how much sealant should be used here...

Regards

Stan

ouch that sucks :( When I did mine I used a bead about 1/16" thick and then smoothed it with a wet finger ... a very thin layer is all that you need.
Regardsw Jon
