My 1987 Mariner 20 hp had been arcing and sparking near the wiring harness in the engine. I checked for bad wires and replaced any that were suspect, including the battery cables. When I turned on the key, the wires still got really hot. I replaced the solenoid with a new factory part and now, when I turn on the key, the wire between the starter and solenoid IMMEDIATELY starts to melt and burn.

The starter was turning, but really slowly during this.

Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Did you replace the wire with too small guage of wire? There's a lot of current going through there and a 14 guage or even 12 guage probably couldn't handle that and would melt.
Eric
