what electrical damage can it have done

I bought a 1971 merc 1 cyl 4 hp motor that sat for years in a barn. The wire from the points to the coil and the ground wire from the bottom of the stator to the throttle link had rotted and cracked insulation and bare wire touching each other and the motor itself, I had no spark at all and wonder what could have gone bad while trying to start the motor. I replaced both wires and still have no spark.
what shall I do now...?????

The stator should OHM test 3600 t0 5500 or put out 195 t0 250 volts on a DVA

How do I do that test??? Is a DVA a digital volt ampmeter???

Re: what electrical damage can it have done

Bill, a DVA is a direct voltage adapter and read only peak voltage, most novice mechanics won't have one so are stuck with OHM testing. I am still presuming that your engine has 1 large stator and no ign. module or large condenser that you can see--Bob

No I did not I looked it over close an I did not see any cracks, the wire from it to the coils was all frayed and I spliced a new wire on it. The original wire looked like it was factory made as part of the block and appeared to be welded on to the stud.

The oraginal wire should come off the stud, because it is a high voltage wire it can short out the stator even when they look fine, I replace them when ever replaceing pts. the are very troblesome--Bob

Re: what electrical damage can it have done

I checked both sites and the stators for a 4 hp start at year 1972, mine is a 1971 one cylinder. Apparently there is a difference in stators. I checked the local merc dealer and he said that none are available. Any other suggestions

Bill, I just went to BAM Marine.com and cked there books it says 4hp engines sereal 3028361 to 3296136 use stator 336-3962A4 which is a CDI number 336-3996 according to my manual, take the time and ck it out the way I did--Bob

Re: what electrical damage can it have done

Laddies,
I have checked that part number 336-3996 with cdi and they have it listed as a two wire unit. The stator on my motor has only one green wire coming out of the bottom of the stator thru a little rubber grommet that runs directly to the coil. The second wire is a ground wire that runs from a screw on the bottom of the stator to the throttle linkage.
The only other wire on the motor runs from a stud that connects from the points to the coil.
They have a list price of over 200 for it. That is what I paid for the motor

All CD ign parts are pricey you might look around for a donor engine that would be your best bet
