4 hp Coil loose inside itself???

I have a 1971 merc 1 cyl 4 hp motor with a type 1 ignition without an electrical module<br /><br />The coil almost looks like it is a two piece unit with one part (The part with the wires attached) slipped inside the other part (the part with the rubber boot over it). The former part wiggles from side to side inside the latter part.<br /><br />is this normal????

Bill thats not to uncommon, if it's real bad you can put a shim between the hold down and the coil, the main thing is the little ground wire underneath the coils is grounded and make sure the motor has the right coil the most overlooked problem on the phazer pt ign. is the little insulater block on the point screw shorting out. Half of the stators that get changed on those engines are changed because the blocks are cracked--Bob

can you be a bit more specific on the little insulator block on the point screw, is it one of the two screws hold the points down or are you talking about that white plastic block thing that slips into a groove and has a wire running from the points to the coil

The white plastic block, because that system is a high voltage system at the pts. the slightest damage to the block will cause mant problems
