I have the L/U shifting fine from the motor, however when I shift from the controls, I can't get all gears to engage. Either I can adjust for full reverse engagement, but lose forward. Or I can adjust for full forward engagement, but lose reverse. Please see This Topicfor work I did on the lower unit.
If I disconnect the shift cables, I can shift fine from the motor.
How can I get more throw from the cable.

Sometimes you need to replace the shifter box!

Yep... a worn box won't throw the cable enough.

-W

Re: Shift Throw - 1963 Merc 1000

Thanks guys.
How much throw do these controls normally have? What boxes would be compatible with my motor (1963 Merc 1000)? Also, are there any serviceable parts in the controls? I took it apart yesterday, and didn't see anything worn (was mainly looking for adjustments).

Are these the parts which would wear, and cause the shortened cable throw? Also, what boxes would be compatible with my motor? Lastly, does anyone know the normal cable throw?

Thanks.

I had the exact smame problem...i can see that the first picture is worn. The part is only about 25-20 bucks and will fix your problem.

If the bottom picture is warn were the little "nub" goes into the spot on the top picture you may need to replace that as well...about $45

Hope it helps

Re: Shift Throw - 1963 Merc 1000

Thanks everyone. Last weekend I tore into things more, and I think I may have things working. I ended up replacing the shift cable, as I found that it was binding severely towards the end of it's throw. In order to move it (when seperated from the controls), I had to stick an awl through the hole in the end for leverage. The new cable is much smoother. With everything put together, I was able to adjust things so I could get both forward and reverse. I can't make the l/u slip by hand any more. A water trial will be the final test.
I can hear in the control box now that when the throttle cable starts moving, there is a scraping noise. In fact, another cable is waiting to be installed (for throttle).
I'll update once I perform a water test. This may not happen for a couple of weeks though.

Just wondering, if cables are not fully engaging the but just enough to get in gear, would/could this damage transmission?
