I have a 94 searayder with a 90hp sportjet. First part of the year I took the boat out and it ran like a top. The last time I went out it started right up and idle while I went to unhook from the trailer. Before I could get it unhooked it died and I could not get ti to restart and idle. I could restart it with the choke button out and the trottle forward but as soon as I would back off it would die out again. I have since noticed fuel runnign out the front of th carbs when I am trying to start the engine. I pulled the carbs and cleaned them. After that I got the boat started up, but it seemed to race the motor while idleing. I adjusted my idle mixture screws and then I could not get it to idle again. I was able to get it to start while playing with the trottles on the carbs.

Any ideas of what to turn to next I am at a loss.

The idle mixture screws are helpful, but the float level must be right, or you can flood out the engine.

Also, timing can and does shift. You might want to have that checked.

good luck,
fp

I when I pulled the carbs I check the floats according to the mannual and all looked right. Should I just replace them just incase they are filling with fuel.

Since I have not tested the timing on anything before do I need a special light for boats or will one that is used on autos work.

lv2, Try pumping your fuel bulb to see if it gets hard. If it does not and you have fuel running out of carb you most likely have a float needle not sealing and cutting fuel flow when float chamber gets full. This will flood engine.

I do not have a fuel primer bulb. It has a fuel pump so I can not test it this way.

Thanks for the information and thoughts though.

The timing light used for cars will work. The timing marks are on the flywheel guard. You are looking for about 8 degrees BTDC at idle, and about 32 degrees BTDC at cranking speed, WOT, with the spark plugs removed.

It is best to disconnect the throttle and hold the tower shaft by hand.

The high speed idle adjustment is at the top of the tower shaft, where it connects to the advance mechanism. The low speed idle is at the bottom of the tower shaft. It looks like an idle speed adjustment. It isn't. Idle speed happens with the throttle plates completely closed.

Your floats are probably fine, I've not seen one of these fill with fuel, or become 'loggy'.

Good luck,
fp
