I have an 89 150 Black Max (serioal 6551861) that has been overcharging. I recently replaced the rectifier, and while doing so, noticed a red wire, in close proximity to the rectifier, and with a 20 amp fuse in it - but leading to nowhere. The unconnected end of this red wire appeared to have ring typer fastener that was broken off - but nowhere could I find where it might have been connected (if at all). On the Mercury website (parts express) the wire is identified as Part# 84-95084A2. I have ordered a service manual from Mercury, but am looking for a quick answer. I'm still experiencing the overcharging problem 15+ volts depending on throttle speed, and am wondering whether this mystery wire could be the problem. Help!

I have a 1988 blk max, same wire. Mine apparently is not needed. My charging system works well. It sounds to me your voltage regulator is bad.<br /> Dead Eye

On my 1987 150 Black Max XR2 that wire connects to the positive post on the rectifier. BD
