I have a 2 cyl merc outboard not sure what year plate on bottom of motor has numbers 6140957. The power pack number is 339-7452 A3. My question is it has no spark I can take the wire off power pack that say blk/wht and then it has spark and will start and run. This wire runs up under the flywheel not sure if I need a power pack or not.Would be nice to have elect scematic or what is happening when I disconnect wire.Also if these numbers will help give me a year model. Hi Charlie,<br /><br />Looks like you have a 1978-1980 era 40hp.<br /><br />I don't have the wiring diagrams at hand (I'm not at home). I think that wire is the ignition kill wire. Sounds like it's shorted to ground somewhere.<br /><br />Chris..............
