seized steering cable??

I have a 65 hp merc....the cable is seized where it goes through the motor.....i removed the grease fitting and nut on the left side and am trying to gently hammer it out to regrease...but it is quite tough and doesn't want to free up that easy......any suggestions please?

I use 3/8" or larger brass rod and a big hammer for those occassions. No need to be gentle.

lots of penatrating oil then grab motor and try to free it up

We replaced ours on the 275 Ranger 115 merc and you can't be gentle. We took a big wrench and put behind the big nut and boy I didn't think we had a big enough hammer. After we got it out we bought a brush that fits in a drill and ran it back and forth through the tube until it seemed clean and round then replaced the cable. Works like a new one now.

I have used a pipe wrench to "rock" the cable end front to back, while applying penetrating oil. This method works well.

what did you put the pipe wrench on to rock it?....the end i am hammering on is the smaller peice of steel with the hole in it for the rod connector....am afraid of smashing that hole, even with a bolt in it

Chipp, I put the pipe wrench on the cable end (with the hole in it). You will need have a couple of inches of the cable end sticking out to grab with the pipe wrench.
