how much of the engine should be in the water... is it possible to have the engine TOO far in the water?<br /><br />is there a general rule to go by for this?

Cavitation plate is typically even with the bottom of the hull.

As Baitis says, yes and yes. Too low and effeciency drops way off (more drag, lower RPM's), too high and prop will ventilate and water pick-ups may not be deep enough to cool motor properly.<br /><br />General rule of thumb is mount the motor as high as possible without the prop ventilating. Every boat/motor combination is different so trial and error is the only way.
