Default Mariner 40 stalls going into gear!!!!

Ello all, this is my first post, and a perplexing one at that.I've got a Mariner 40hp 2 stroke, tiller steered, manual start. It runs really well out of the water on muffles, and in the water on tickover, but as soon as you try to go into gear either forward or reverse it stalls. Technician at boathard thinks the spline have sheared, but i cant see this causeing the stall. Just no power surely??? Also mentioned has been fuel line, but as it runs for hrs (literally) on idle i am some what confused. Please help the newbie!!!Cheers allJimmy C

Welcome to iboats. First thing that comes to mind is restricted main jets in the carbs. Gas turns to varnish with the least provocation these days. Or maybe you just need to fatten-up the idle mixture screws. 2-strokes need a rich idle mixture to be able to accelerate. Some people set them where they idle nice and smooth. But that's too lean for acceleration. About 1/4 turn out from smooth gets you in the ballpark.
