We have a pontoon boat with a Mercury 70 hp Bigfoot outboard. We had a dead battery and put a new one in. The boat will run for several hours before the battery looses its charge. We charge it and it will run again for several hours then dies. The engine doesn't seem to be charging the battery. What could the problem be?

Re: Battery Won't Charge

Not charging ? Possibly a bad rectifier. Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage at the battery with the motor off. A charged battery should read about 12.7V(+/-). Now start the motor and measure the voltage at the battery. It should be about 13.7V (+/-). If not, the rectifier is probably shot.

What other accy's are you running off the battery. The motor itself should not discharge the battery as it does not draw any current other than for starting or running the tilt/trim motor.
