I have a 40hp mercury serial #6140949. when i got the motor the starter was out with a 9 tooth gear which was chewed up badly. I got a new 9 tooth gear, and it would just barely touch the ring gear. Returned 9 tooth and got 10 tooth. It engages and starts the motor but now it will sometimes lock up against the ring gear. the ring gear has 77 teeth. I am afraid it will hurt something if it keeps locking up. the gear also sticks halfway when going back down the shaft. starter # 50-55601
