Correct Idle RPM

1989 Mercury 80hp, 3 cyl. Oil Injection Sn# 0B165899.<br />Could someone tell me the correct rpm in forwad gear for this motor please.<br />My father idle it down to troll with, I inherited the boat and would like for it to shift into gear without dying.<br />Motor runs great otherwise.

idle as low as possible without stalling when placed into gear .<br />usually thats about 550-650 in gear .in the water<br />the idle will change from "muffs" to actually in the water..temp and exhaust backpressure are different.

Shoot for no more than 800rpm to avoid hammering the gears in the L/U when shifting. Ideally if you can obtain 625-725 RPM while in gear in the water you are doing good.

Hi Kickinchicken, according to the service manual, your motor RPM @ idle is 650-700(in gear).
