Mariner 40 is staying hot after i put a water pump on

I have a Mariner 40 that i changed the water pump on and the engine still gets hot and there is smoke i don't think this is normal can someone please help me i am not for sure what it could be. thanks for your help.

After you changed the waterpump, did you get water from the tell-tale when running the motor ? How are you determining that the motor gets hot ?When you say smoke, what do you mean ? All two-stroke motors will smoke because of the oil mixed in the gas. The smoke is part of the exhaust gases.

Yes it I get water from the tell-tale. The motor is hot as blazes even under the plugs. I know that it is suppose to smoke a little because of the oil mixter but i think it is smoking a little bit more than it is suppose to. Some one said that it might be a thermostat but then i was told that this one doesn't have one so i have no clue.

You are correct, these motors do not have thermostats. What year is yours ? Is the water from the tell-tale cold, warm or hot after running for 5 minutes ? What part of the motor is the smoke coming from ? Is it possible that it is steam you are seeing and not smoke ?
