Hi
I have a 1965 Viking (Chrysler) 20 h.p. motor on a 1965 14-foot aluminum (Sears) runabout. Partly because of persistent oil leak problems from the lower unit, and partly because I would like a quieter motor, I am thinking of buying a new motor. Does a 20 hp 4-stroke weigh more than my current motor? (I am concerned that even though the boat is "rated" to take the motor, the new 4-stroke may weigh more than the old 2-stroke and I will be trading one less serious problem for a more serious one.) Are there other problems I should think about?

After 30 years of service, that Chrysler motor doesn't really owe you anything. I don't think you will be disappointed in owning a new 4 stroke. I would expect your existing motor has a lot of metal contributing to the weight and therefore wouldn't expect a new model 4 stroke (manufactured from modern lightweight material) to be much heavier.

I beleve your 20hp comes in at 75lbs (EDIT: Looks like closer to 80lbs). A new 4-stroke will be around 100-150 depending on which make and options. The Tohatsu 18hp weights 115 for example.

Old outboards were made of aluminium, just like new ones. The old ones often weight less than modern ones due to simpler design, etc.

To get the same kind of performance you had before, I think you should consider a 35Hp. I think if you put a 25 on you might be a little disappointed.

I was thinking just the opposite. In my experience, the older motors were not very strong when compared to new motors of equal HP rating.

I was thinking a new 15 HP would be as fast (if not faster) than the old 20. The 35 might be way too large for that boat.

Guess we really don't have enough specific info.

Good luck, Trout

I would think Willy is pretty close if we're still comparing the old 2 stroke to a new 4 stroke in that hp range. At least thats what we hear from people who have done that.
