Default Charging system ? 135 mariner

1989 V mariner MarathonIt quit charging and i proceeded to do normal checks. My question is . Is the rectifier located inside the sealed box with the voltage regulator.I did the test on the three wires going into this box and it met the requirements to pass.Could the regulator itself be bad and rectifier be good.Does anyone know a test to do to check the regulator to make sure that is what it is before plopping down the 400 bucks for it.

I just looked at the parts breakdown. I never saw one of those regulators. Geez! It's huge! I'd have to believe that the rectifier is inside. It is on all the other ones I can think of. And I don't see a separate rectifier in the parts catalog. I wonder if it could be replaced with one (probably two) from a newer model. That could save you a hundred.

Those things pop any time the battery connection isn't perfect or when it gets hot. They are a piece of work, or something like that. CDI makes an aftermarket kit to chenge them to the 2 regulator setup. Save yourself another 400 dollar pop and buy the kit. It's pricey, but will hold up MUCH longer.

174-9610A18 is the whole thing, stator and regulator kit. The regulator kit is 194-8736K1, but requires a stator change, 2 wire to 4 wire on the yellow charging coils. If it were me, I'd use their reg kit and buy a Mercury stator. They run the voltage higher on the run coils and will pop a Mercury box, they deny it but I've seen it way too many times. The link is here .
