Heat Sensors

I recently purchased a pontoon boat with a 40 hp Merc 2 cycle motor. It's a 1997, serial number OE258681. Is there any kind of sensor on this motor that will let you know that it is overheating? I noticed in a parts catalogue that there is something called a thermo switch. Would that be a part of a warning system and if it is, is there a way to see if it is operating correctly? Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Re: Heat Sensors

You should have a thermoswitch mounted on the cylinder head cover near the upper spark plug.

They can be tested for function by grounding the wire connector. You should have a buzzer in your controls, that will beep to indicate the high temperature alarm.

You can also remove the thermoswitch and test it for temperature range by immersing in it hot water etc and checking for continuity points at various temperatures.

The thermoswitch testing in hot water will work depending on the temp. it is set to give continuity.
