I just bought a used 93 Mercury motor (40hp). When we go for more power the motor starts acting as though it isn't getting gas all of the time. The result is a clunking sound every couple of seconds. This doesn't seem to effect the performance, but can't be good. A friend suggested that sing it hadn't been run in a while there could be sediments in the tank or maybe a fuel line problem. Any advice would be great, I have no knowledge of outboards and I am poor, so I must fix this myself.
Thanks in Advance

Re: 93 Mercury Motor Problem Help

Totally a carb problem or a fuel pump problem... what HP is the motor? It was probably sitting for a while and the carbs are all gummed up... buy a manual, take em apart, clean them until the insides look brand new, and replace the needle and seat, check the float height, etc..

The fuel pump is a easy repair, and cheap, get a fuel pump rebuild kit from your dealer, takes 15 mins.

Get the manual, it will explain it step by step - real easy, I can do a carb cleaning in under an hour easy and im retarted with things like that usually.
