Black Stator replacement Merc/Mariner 75hp 3Cyl

Season's Greetings!

I just got the chance to buy a used red stator kit 398-832074 A 4 which I believe should fit my '93 engine currently fitted with its second black stator.

I'd appreciate anyone able to tell me is this a drop in replacement or just what is involved in upgrading to the red stator. E.g. is there rewiring required. It seems like the red stator has less outputs and it comes with a new rectifier.

I tried to search the forum for info as I've previously seen tons of helpful info on these stators when my previous black one died but the search engine won't for me work today.

Nothing against EBAY,but I don't like electronics, of any kind bought used.Also Mercury's answer with the RED staor is ........ And exspensive.

Try a search for CDI.They used to be Repair,Inc.

Last month I spoke with one of their reps.He explained in detail how they have a replacement stator to replace Mercs,and why it won't overheat like the originals.

Not sure they can do your year/model,but I'd go there first.

DHP, my experience of used electronics-like many others on this forum- has been generally very postive as well as mighty cost effective. Given what these parts cost new in Ireland or even to freight in from the US, locally available used parts are a heaven-sent essential for my boating. YMMV so you might want to start a separate thread to see what others think or debate the merits.

Meanwhile I'm still hoping someone can give me some info on what's involved with changing to a red stator.

I've done the mechanics last time out - I just need to know if anything else needs to be changed/rewired. I still can't use the search engine to mine all the valuable info on here -seems like it'll only search December for me.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can respond with the one line or so of info I need.

If the only thing you get is the stator, it'll do you no good. They come in kit form including instructions, conversion wires, and most importantly a voltage regulator or two. One is long and black and the other (if included) is like the one you already have but stronger. The long black one is absolutely necessary! You might get by without the other, but Red stators often have higher charging output which requires a stronger regulator. The long black one controls the voltage for the ignition system and you can't run the motor without it with a Red stator. Make certain it's included. The black stator has blue and red wires for the ignition system and the red one eliminates one of those, thus fewer wires.

sorry.I wasn't thinking deep enough to remember how expensive parts elsewhere are.(Not that I consider them cheap here.)The number you list should be a complete kit,and I come up with a $283 price here in the states.

WillyB thanks a bunch for a perfect answer - just what I needed. If you could take a minute to look at this, it looks like it's got the voltage regulator you specified?

and it certainly looks like the right stator for my '93 Mariner 3cylinder 3 carb with autoblend+PTT S/N 9695919 (from Belgium)

Thanks also for confirming the wire count was down!

DHP thanks for your comments - strangely the UK kit price is not that far off the US at about +20%which is very unusual. But it still makes this offering a potentially attractive insurance policy!

Daibheld, The picture you posted has the long black adapter module mentioned by Willy. It contains a full wave rectifier for AC-DC conversion, and a shunt voltage regulator to limit Switchbox voltage to 300V. Needed because the high speed winding(red wire) is no longer used.

With the red stator, Mercury recommends a combo rectifier/regulator on the yellow wires from the stator.

Daiheid, go to www.mercurypartsexpress.com for part #'s. I bought mine from a local supplier and it's made by CDI, an after market product. Since our HP is different, part number may be different too.

I've used a lot of CDIs products and have never had a problem. I think the quality many times is better than the OEM, the only drawback is that they try to use the same part to adapt to several different models and you have to be careful to follow their installation instructions to the letter. The company is owned by Joe Demarco who is also the president of AMTECH (Association of Marine Technicians). They do a lot for the indepedant shops so I like to plug them every chance.

Rabbit, I agree. The CDI rec/reg I installed is working fine after 2 years. They even made it so it fit perfectly in the spot where the old rectifier was, utilizing the screw holes in the frame so it has maximum heat transfer. Price was better than Merc too.
