killed it won't start

I have I believe a 83' merc 35 hp.with remote. Was working fine. running fine, I was looking at a little lever right on front of motor that has a little electric symbol on it. I turn it (flipped it the other direction). The motor killed, so I went up front to start it (after I flipped the lever back). Now I have nothing but a noise that sound like a starter spinning with out engaging

I think the little lever you turned is the manual choke, the starter problem is not related either the bendix gear is stuck or the starter is not turning up to speed, could be the battery is low--Bob
